Aloha friends and welcome (back) to my website! :)

Today we've got some projection photography!!

But, to start things off, it's important to note the difference between a selfie and a self-portrait. A selfie is usually a quick picture taken by somebody who's not really thinking about it, they're just taking a quick picture. There's no creativity behind the picture taken, it's just a quick snapshot. Also, usually selfies only of your face. Whereas, on the contrary, a self-portrait has a lot of thought and effort behind it and it's taken by somebody who's thinking about it. There is creativity behind self-portraits and self-portraits can be full-body or just headshots but they're usually taken further away from the person rather than just holding a phone in your hand right in front of your face.

Generally, my opinion about being in front of a camera depends on how I'm feeling that day and how I'm dressed up and it depends on a lot of other factors. Typically, on social media, I don't tend to post a lot of myself. I do it here and there when I have little boosts of self-confidence, but that's literally like three or four times a year. Otherwise, I prefer to be behind the camera and not in front. So, doing this assignment was a little uncomfortable at first, but then we kind of just took the pictures and got it done and over with. And to do so, we used the projector in our photography teacher's classroom.

When looking for images to project onto me, I found myself attracted to patterns; a lot of patterns. And usually, the patterns would relate to me in some way. For example, in one of my photos, as you can see, the image projected is hello written in a bunch of different languages. I chose that because I like studying languages. Or for another one of my open Choice pictures, one of the images was colored pixels kind of like I lost signal. But I did that to add color to me just like how sometimes my personality can be colorful. So I kind of based it off of what I like and what I'm like. However, in the beginning, I did Google projection photography images. and I kind of found some ones that I liked but I ended up not using them.

I took my photos in class. And in class, we had the choice to use a white background, a black background, or both. I technically used both a black background and a white background. On the white background, you noticed that all of the image shows up. Whereas, on a black background, none of the image shows up. So knowing which does what can help add to the overall effect of the photos. Also knowing this can help with planning the outfit that you're going to wear with the projection photography.

Then, if you want the image to show up on you then you should wear light colors but if you don't want the image to show up on your clothing then you should wear dark colors. I did a combination of both, I wore light colors for some of the photos and then darker colors for other photos.

After going through this process the advice that I would give to others to improve their results either from a technical or a creative standpoint would be to just have fun with it. I know that's really cliche so let me explain. Sometimes I feel awkward to be in front of the camera... especially when you're used to being the one behind the camera. But, if you just let loose with this assignment or this photography topic, then I feel like you'll get much better results. I noticed that in the beginning, you could tell that I was uncomfortable in the photos. But, as I loosened up the photos looked better. Also, choose photos that relate to you. I think that'll help you enjoy the photos more in the long run.

There are also different variations and potential ideas for if I were to do something like this again. And if I were to try something like this again in the future, I think I'd want to change the direction of a light source or I think I'd want to choose a different image that goes along with an outfit or a look or something. I feel like if I were to be more coordinated with the photos they would look really cool. But I also feel like if the light were coming from a different direction then it would change the way that the photo looks.
